Focus Brings Clarity

Nathan Buhr intentionally picked up a camera during his freshman year of high school and the art has been a constant in his life ever since. The handed down 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) Cannon A-1 was a gift from his uncle who was employed at the Kodak Company. Nathan enrolled consistently in photography courses throughout his time at Wichita High School East and came to know well his way around the darkroom. Using the Canon A-1, primarily with black and white film, provided great practice in analog photography and he was later granted a silver key in the annual Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.

At Bethel College Nathan continued to expand his understanding of 35mm photography, but also began exploring digital photography. Acquiring the equipment to photograph and print digitally, Nathan soon established a workflow with the new technology. Throughout his time in College, Nathan cultivated a sense of scale, balance, rhythm, and space in addition to other design principals and developed a body of work. Working for the Bethel College Collegian newspaper, first as a photographer and then as Photo Editor, provided him additional opportunities to practice and polish his craft. Nathan finished his time at Bethel College in earning a Bachelors of Arts in Art with a emphisis in Photography.

Working with his camera after graduating from Bethel College, Nathan has covered over ten weddings, numerous high school marching band tournaments, sporting events, social events, commercial shoots and much more. He has created headshots and portraits for actors, writers, and artists. Though multiple journeys domestically and abroad, Nathan has enjoyed advancing his travel photography and found a paticular interest in capturing the details of foreign places.

In a shift of focus from photography to writing, Nathan enrolled at East Tennessee State University where he pursued a Masters of Arts in Liberal Studies. The courses that he chose to pursue were in the fields of History, Sociology, and Philosophy and provided guidence towards his Masters thesis which delt with the Polish Solidarity Movement.

Nathan currently resides at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Tibetan Buddhist Monastery in Woodstock, New York.
